Haringey’s Obesity Alliance is a group of organisations committed to reducing obesity. By working in partnership with health, social care, schools, community and voluntary groups, local business and residents we can make Haringey a healthier place, where people are more physically active, eat better and have healthy long lives. Chaired by Jason Arthur, Haringey cabinet member for Finance and Health, the Alliance will report on progress to Haringey’s Health and Wellbeing Board.

Our case put simply

Obesity in the UK is rising rapidly. By 2050 it’s predicted that 60% of men and 50% of women will be obese. In Haringey we know that obesity is closely linked to deprivation with children about to start secondary school being 2.5 times more likely to be obese in the deprived parts of the borough. That is why reducing obesity is a priority in Haringey’s Health and Wellbeing strategy (2015-2018).

Evidence strongly suggests that we need effort and intervention on many fronts to reduce obesity – any single intervention is unlikely to be effective on its own. We want the whole community in Haringey and all our partners to be committed to and involved in preventing obesity. The Alliance aspires to a culture and environment that supports eating well and being physically active, where the healthier choice is the easier choice.

Our mission

Reducing obesity will require persistent effort to bring about sustained change, creating a healthier Haringey where the healthier choice is the easy choice. By coming together in an Alliance, we can boost organisation’s efforts through providing a platform and forum for partners to advocate, develop and coordinate activities and projects.

Our ambition

To work together to reduce obesity in Haringey so that by 2018 fewer children, young people and adults in Haringey will be obese or overweight.

What we are asking?

We are asking local organisations and businesses to join Haringey’s Obesity Alliance – to commit to delivering key and significant change themselves through an organisational pledge and to be an active member of the collective effort.
